The Car I Was Told to Move

When I was twenty-four, I had driven from Las Vegas to Detroit in two and a half days. About

three months after arriving, I went to visit my friend Andy, who lived on the corner of Healy and

Outer Drive.

I parked my car beside his house. I had planned to run in and out quickly, but Andy wasn’t

ready, so I sat down on the steps to wait.

While I was sitting there, I heard the Spirit say:

“Move your car.”

Because I was waiting for Andy, I ignored it.

A few moments later I heard it again.

I answered back, almost casually, “Alright, give me three minutes.”

The Spirit replied, “Okay.”

After that there was silence.

I told Andy to hurry up and sat on the steps looking out the window at the hazard lights on my

car.

Just minutes later we heard a loud crash.

A man had fallen asleep at the wheel and slammed directly into my vehicle.

Andy looked at me and asked, “What do you want to do?”

I replied, “Nothing. It was my fault. I should have listened.”

At first I thought the lesson was simple: I had ignored the Spirit and suffered the consequence.

But as I reflected on it later, I realized something deeper.

If it had truly been God’s will for me to move the car, I would have moved it.

Instead, the moment itself had a purpose.

God allowed the event to happen so I could understand the importance of listening and

recognizing His voice. I was being trained.

Just as Jonah tried to run in another direction and still found himself inside God’s plan, my

decision and the accident were both part of a larger lesson.

God was demonstrating something to me:

He sees what is coming before it happens.

John 13:19

“Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He.”
