A PRELUDE TO IT WAS WRITTEN

THE GREATEST DISCOVERY

Christ in Jesus. Christ in Us.

The Written Life Becoming Visible.

What Jesus reveals about the Father, the life we share, and the purpose already moving through us.

THE QUESTION BENEATH THE GOSPEL

What If We Have Lived the Events Without Yet Seeing What They Belong To?

  • THE QUESTION BENEATH THE GOSPEL

Most of us know what it is to live through something before we understand it.

A relationship ends. A door closes. A season changes. Something we prayed for does not happen when we expected. Something we never expected happens instead.

While we are inside the experience, we name it from what we can see.

Loss. Rejection. Failure. Delay. Confusion. Wrong turn. Bad timing.

Sometimes years pass before the same experience begins to read differently. The event did not change. Our understanding did.

All things must be fulfilled which were written... concerning Me.

- Luke 24:44

He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.

- Luke 24:45

Notice what Jesus opened. Not the events. Their understanding.

The disciples had already lived the betrayal, the arrest, the denial, the cross, the death, and the sealed tomb. They knew what happened. What they did not yet understand was what what happened belonged to.

Jesus opened their understanding. The betrayal remained betrayal. The cross remained the cross. The tomb remained the tomb. But the fragments gathered.

What had appeared as scattered loss became readable as fulfillment. The events did not change. Sight changed.

That same movement reaches our life. We often live the moment before we understand the moment. We participate before we recognize what our participation belongs to. We meet people before we understand their place.

We enter seasons before we recognize their purpose. We experience pressure before we understand what the pressure is exposing. We carry gifts before we know why they were given.

Life continues while understanding develops. Formation continues while interpretation is incomplete. Meaning can already be moving before awareness catches up.

So if Jesus opened their understanding to see what the events belonged to, what was the Whole that His own life was revealing?

Jesus kept directing our sight toward the same Source.

The Father.

THE FATHER REVEALED

If Jesus Revealed the Father, What Was His Life Showing Us?

  • THE FATHER REVEALED

He who has seen Me has seen the Father.

- John 14:9

The Father is Spirit. Invisible. Unseen. Yet Jesus could say that to see Him was to see the Father.

What were people seeing?

They were seeing what was invisible in the Father become readable through Life.

  • When Jesus loved, Love became visible.
  • When He showed compassion, Love entered relationship.
  • When He healed, restoration took form.
  • When He corrected, truth became audible.
  • When He forgave, mercy became embodied.
  • When He waited, timing became visible.
  • When He served, humility entered form.
  • When He suffered without becoming hatred, Love remained Love.

The circumstances surrounding Him became the field through which what was in the Father became visible.

Law. Tradition. Family. Disciples. Crowds. Religious leaders. Miracles. Misunderstanding. Betrayal. Suffering. Death. Resurrection.

All appear within the Life He was written to live. Jesus moves through every part from the Father.

I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.

- Matthew 5:17

God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world...

- John 3:17

Fulfillment.

Revelation.

The Father's purpose becoming visible through Life.

If the Father was being revealed through Jesus, what was living and expressing the Father through Him?

Scripture takes us behind the visible life and answers:

In the beginning was the Word.

- John 1:1

CHRIST, JESUS, AND US

The Distinction That Opens the Whole Picture

  • CHRIST, JESUS, AND US

John begins before Bethlehem.

In the beginning was the Word.

- John 1:1

And the Word became flesh.

- John 1:14

Hebrews gives us another view:

A body You have prepared for Me... in the volume of the book it is written of Me... I have come to do Your will.

- Hebrews 10:5-7

Notice what is present.

  • The Father.
  • The Word.
  • A prepared body.
  • A written Book.
  • A will.
  • A Life through which that will becomes visible.

The Father is Source - invisible, eternal, unseen.

Christ is the eternal Word - the living expression of the Father.

The Spirit gives life.

Life is the authored field through which what is invisible becomes lived and visible.

And in Jesus, the eternal Word became flesh within an actual human life: body, name, family, history, relationships, boundaries, timing, pressure, an appointed hour, and a written earthly course.

The Father is Source.

Christ is the eternal Word.

The Word becomes flesh in Jesus.

Through Jesus, the invisible Father becomes knowable within human life.

Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

- 1 Corinthians 12:27

Christ is the Head.

We are members.

Distinct lives. Distinct positions. Distinct portions.

Yet one Body.

If Christ is one, how does the one Christ-Life become visible through many members?

D I S C O V E R Y 0 4

THE DISCOVERY OF THE FRAGMENT

We Have Been Naming the Whole From One Part

  • THE DISCOVERY OF THE FRAGMENT

A wound becomes: "This is who I am."

A rejection becomes: "I am unwanted."

A success becomes: "This is what makes me valuable."

A divorce becomes: "I am the one who was left."

A prison sentence. A religion. A title. A relationship. A gift. A failure.

Each may be real. But each is still a fragment.

We see one chapter and assume we have read the whole Book.

For as the body is one and has many members... so also is Christ.

 - 1 Corinthians 12:12

The Body is one. The members are many. And distinction remains.

The eye remains eye. The hand remains hand. The foot remains foot.

Difference is preserved without becoming separation.

A fragment is a distinct portion within the Whole carrying an appointed position, history, awareness, boundary, relationship, and purpose.

Its meaning becomes readable through relationship.

A member does not become whole by pretending to be the Body. The member becomes whole by recognizing what it belongs to.

How do many distinct portions reveal one Whole?

ONE IMAGE - MANY POINTS OF LIGHT

A Picture for How the Many Remain One

  • ONE IMAGE - MANY POINTS OF LIGHT

Think about a digital image traveling through fiber-optic light.

At its origin, the image is whole. But during transmission, information travels through pulses, signals, and points of light.

Each carries a portion. No one pulse is the complete picture. Yet the portions move in relationship. And the image appears.

Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

 - Matthew 6:10

What is whole in God becomes visible through Life.

Different people. Different generations. Different histories.
Different gifts. Different boundaries. Different portions.

Yet one Body.

You are the light of the world.

- Matthew 5:14

Many points of light.

One Life becoming visible.

Each member carries a portion. And the portions reveal their meaning through relationship to the Whole.

Where did those portions originate? How does what is whole in God enter time?

D I S C O V E R Y 0 6

THE WRITTEN LIFE

The Word Speaks Before the Visible Arrives

  • THE WRITTEN LIFE

Most of us live as though tomorrow arrives blank. Then we try to create it.

What will happen? How will I make this work? How do I become what I am supposed to become?

But Scripture gives us another picture.

A body You have prepared for Me... in the volume of the book it is written of Me...

- Hebrews 10:5-7

In Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me, when as yet there were none of them.

- Psalm 139:16

The day does not become authored when we recognize it. Meaning precedes recognition.

Declaring the end from the beginning... My counsel shall stand.

- Isaiah 46:10

Daniel receives a portion before the visible event arrives.

I have now come forth to give you skill to understand.

- Daniel 9:22

Daniel hears of the Anointed One. Centuries later, Gabriel appears again, this time to Mary.

Daniel receives timing. Mary receives announcement. The Word precedes visible fulfillment.

Word -> Time -> Body -> Day -> Life -> Fulfillment

- Daniel 9:22

The written Life is not lifeless fate. It means the visible moment is not the beginning of God's knowing.

D I S C O V E R Y 0 7

LIFE - THE FIELD OF FULFILLMENT

Purpose Needs a World in Which to Become Visible

  • LIFE - THE FIELD OF FULFILLMENT

Think about a seed.

What it was formed to become is already carried within it. But the seed needs a world through which the hidden pattern becomes visible.

Soil. Water. Light. Darkness. Pressure. Time. Season.

Purpose moves through Life in the same way.

Has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings.

- Acts 17:26

Time matters. Boundaries matter. Place matters. Relationship matters.

  • Now look at Bethlehem.
  • Gabriel announced the body.
  • Micah named the place.
  • Caesar issued the decree.
  • Joseph carried David's lineage.
  • Mary carried the child.
  • The town filled.
  • Shepherds occupied the fields.

Different people. Different awareness. One converging scene.

Caesar did not need to understand what his decree was serving. Mary carried awareness of part of what was happening. Yet both participated.

Jesus grows up speaking from inside this same architecture: My Father's business. My hour. Today this Scripture is fulfilled.

For this cause I was born. It is finished.

He lives the Book from within it.

Life is the authored field in which written purpose receives people, place, relationship, pressure, darkness, light, boundary, timing, and an appointed hour.

If authorship can be functioning before everyone understands what they are carrying, what does that reveal about our own life?

D I S C O V E R Y 0 8

WE WERE PARTICIPATING BEFORE WE UNDERSTOOD

Looking Back Reveals Something About Looking Forward

  • WE WERE PARTICIPATING BEFORE WE UNDERSTOOD

There are seasons we understand only afterward.

While we were inside them, we were still:

  • Moving.
  • Choosing.
  • Loving.
  • Reacting.
  • Working.
  • Failing.
  • Learning.
  • Meeting people.
  • Being helped.
  • Helping others.
  • Being formed.

Understanding came later.

So where was God before our awareness caught up?

In Him we live and move and have our being.

- Acts 17:28

He is before all things, and in Him all things consist.

- Colossians 1:17

Then where were we before understanding? Still living and moving in Him.

Where was formation? Still happening.

Where was God? Still God.

Remembrance does not bring God into the story. Remembrance awakens us to the God in whom the story was already moving.

Before awareness, we participate.

As awareness returns, we recognize our participation.

Recognition changes how we carry the next moment.

D I S C O V E R Y 0 9

EGO, CONTRAST, AND AWARENESS

What We Feel Reveals What We Have Been Seeing From

  • EGO, CONTRAST, AND AWARENESS

A message goes unanswered. The outside event is silence.

Inside us, a sentence rises: "I am being rejected."

The body tightens. Emotion rises. We pursue. Withdraw. Accuse. Control. Protect.

Notice what happened. The event was silence. The lived experience became rejection.

Something interpreted the moment.

The ego is the localized sense of "I" through which a fragment experiences its particular life. It gathers memory, fear, personality, desire, protection, attachment, and interpretation.

Because it sees from one position, it can mistake the fragment for the Whole.

The timing may belong to the authored day. The boundary may belong to the Life. The intersection may belong within purpose. But our first interpretation is not automatically God's meaning.

The interpretation becomes lived material within authorship because the moment exposes what was governing us. Now it can become visible. Now truth can meet it.

will guide you into all truth.

- John 16:13

Awareness opens.

  • We recognize fear.
  • Shame.
  • Pride.
  • Attachment.
  • Control.

An old wound interpreting a new moment.

And once truth becomes visible, participation can change.

Not because we became the Author. Because we became conscious.

Have we sometimes read the Gospel itself from the fragment of crisis instead of from the Whole of authorship?

D I S C O V E R Y 1 0

THE CROSS WAS NEVER PLAN B

What If the Cross Was Fulfillment Before It Was Crisis?

  • THE CROSS WAS NEVER PLAN B

Humanity sinned. Creation failed. God responded. Jesus came to repair what went wrong.

That is how the Gospel can appear when we read only from the order in which events became visible.

was foreordained before the foundation of the world.

- 1 Peter 1:20

Before the crisis appears in time, Christ is already held in purpose.

The cross is not an emergency response. It belongs within what God already knew.

Daniel carried timing. David carried witness. Isaiah carried suffering. Micah carried place. Zechariah carried the King and piercing. Gabriel carried announcement. Mary carried the body.

Different generations. Different fragments.

Then at Calvary the fragments converge.

Judas carries one intention. Pilate carries another. The soldiers another. The disciples another.

Their motives differ. Their accountability remains. Yet human intention does not become greater than divine purpose.

It is written. My hour. The Scriptures must be fulfilled. It is finished.

Not failure. Not accident. Not divine reaction. Fulfillment.

Through Jesus, Christ makes visible the Love already present in the Father.

  • Love enters betrayal and remains Love.
  • Love enters accusation and remains Love.
  • Love enters suffering and remains Love.
  • Love enters death without surrendering authorship to death.

And the cross is more than Love demonstrated. It fulfills reconciliation.

What fragmentation could not restore through its own effort, Christ carries.

Remembrance does not replace the cross. Remembrance awakens us to what Christ fulfilled through it.

D I S C O V E R Y 1 1

RESURRECTION AND THE BODY

What Looked Finished Was Still Inside the Story

  • RESURRECTION AND THE BODY

The tomb looked final. Jesus was dead. The stone was sealed. The movement appeared over.

The fragment was real. But the fragment was not the Whole.

Jesus rises.

Not merely as metaphor. Not merely as a new interpretation. Death does not receive the final word.

As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.

- John 20:21

Now the movement opens into the Body.

Christ, revealed through Jesus, is the Head of a many-membered Body.

The disciples had already been living. Learning. Loving. Failing. Following.

Being formed.

Now understanding opens. They begin to recognize what their lives belong to.

The members remember their relationship to the Body.

That is re-membering.

But remembrance is about to reveal even more

D I S C O V E R Y 1 2

PSALM 139 - THE DISCOVERY IN ONE MOVEMENT

What If the Psalm Has Been Describing Our Life All Along?

  • PSALM 139 - THE DISCOVERY IN ONE MOVEMENT

David says:

You know my sitting down and my rising up.

- Psalm 139

You comprehend my path.

- Psalm 139

You have hedged me behind and before.

- Psalm 139

Where can I go from Your Spirit?

- Psalm 139

Knowing. Path. Boundaries. Presence.

Then darkness:

The darkness and the light are both alike to You.

 - Psalm 139

Then formation: "You formed my inward parts."

Then authorship: "In Your book they all were written, the days fashioned for me."

Known. Path. Boundaries. Presence. Darkness. Formation. Book. Fashioned days.

When I awake, I am still with You.

 - Psalm 139

Still. That word changes the movement.

Not: When I awake, God arrives.

When I awake, I am still with You.

The Presence preceded awareness. The Life preceded recognition.

Awakening makes what was already true consciously readable.

And this is where remembrance opens into its fuller meaning.

D I S C O V E R Y 1 3

REMEMBRANCE - THE PRESENT MOMENT OF FULFILLMENT

When What Is Known in God Becomes Visible Through Us

  • REMEMBRANCE - THE PRESENT MOMENT OF FULFILLMENT

Remembrance is not only remembering where we came from. It is not only understanding our past differently.

Remembrance reaches its living expression in the present.

Because the present is where the written Life becomes embodied.

Yesterday has already entered visible experience. Tomorrow has not yet become our present portion.

But now - this moment - is where Life is being lived.

  • The person is here.
  • The conversation is here.
  • The decision is here.
  • The opportunity is here.
  • The boundary is here.
  • The responsibility is here.
  • The portion is here.

And when awareness awakens inside the moment, we recognize:

God is present.

I am still in Him.

This moment is not outside His knowing.

Something is being revealed.

Something is becoming visible through how I participate.

Remembrance becomes:

I know who I am in God. I recognize where I am within the life He has authored. I recognize what this moment belongs to. And I consciously carry the portion becoming present now.

This gives new meaning to the day God saw as very good.

God sees from the Whole. We live through unfolding portions.

The thought is already known in Him. The Word expresses the thought. Life carries the Word. The day arrives. The body occupies its place. The moment becomes present. Awareness recognizes. Participation embodies. And what was known in God becomes visible on earth.

Thought -> Word -> Life -> Day -> Present Moment -> Awareness -> Embodiment -> Fulfillment

That is where glory enters.

Glory is purpose becoming visible in its appointed form.

  • Love becomes visible where Love is required.
  • Mercy becomes visible where mercy is required.
  • Truth becomes visible.
  • Wisdom becomes visible.
  • Restraint becomes visible.
  • Service becomes visible.
  • The Word receives embodied expression.

A fulfilled moment becomes glory.
Then another moment arrives. Another portion. Another opportunity for embodiment.

Glory to glory.

Day by day.

Moment by moment.

The Whole becomes increasingly readable through fulfilled portions.

This is "on earth as it is in heaven" becoming lived.

What is whole in God receives visible expression through Life.

D I S C O V E R Y 1 4

THE LIVING EPISTLE

The Word Becoming Readable

  • THE LIVING EPISTLE

You are our epistle... known and read by all men.

- 2 Corinthians 3:2

An epistle is written truth becoming readable.

So the written Life does not remain hidden as an abstract idea. It becomes visible through people.

  • Love becomes readable through how we respond.
  • Mercy becomes readable through forgiveness.
  • Truth becomes readable through honest speech.
  • Patience becomes readable through restraint.
  • Wisdom becomes readable through timing.
  • Repentance becomes readable through changed participation

The Word becomes readable through the body.

We do not merely read sacred words. Our lives become living witness to what those words are producing.

The epistle reveals what has been written.

The temple reveals who dwells.

The image reveals what is invisible.

The Body reveals how the many express one Life

D I S C O V E R Y 1 5

THE TEMPLE OF HIS DWELLING

The Presence Becoming Consciously Lived

  • THE TEMPLE OF HIS DWELLING

Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

- 1 Corinthians 3:16

The Presence is not merely somewhere else.

The temple carries Presence.

But remembrance changes whether that Presence is consciously recognized.

The temple awakens to the One who dwells.

Now the member does not merely ask: Where is God?

Awareness begins to recognize: I am living and moving in Him. His Spirit dwells within His people. The Life before me is not spiritually empty.

The present moment becomes a place of participation.

The temple becomes consciously inhabited. The epistle becomes consciously readable. The member becomes consciously related to the Body.

And now remembrance becomes re-membering.

D I S C O V E R Y 1 6

RE-MEMBERING THE BODY

When the Members Awaken to What They Belong To

  • RE-MEMBERING THE BODY

Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

- 1 Corinthians 12:27

The member is not the Whole. But the member belongs to the Whole.

And now remembrance takes on a corporate dimension.

  • One member awakens.
  • Then another.
  • One recognizes their portion.
  • Another recognizes theirs.
  • One stops trying to be everything.
  • Another stops believing they are nothing.
  • One gives.
  • Another receives.
  • One teaches.
  • Another encourages.
  • One corrects.
  • Another carries mercy.
  • One carries wisdom.
  • Another carries service.

Each member remains distinct. But distinction no longer becomes separation.

The members begin moving consciously under one Head.

This is re-membering.

The member is restored to conscious relationship with the Body. And as the members awaken, the Body itself becomes increasingly readable on earth.

Joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share.

- Ephesians 4:16

Every joint supplies.

Every part does its share.

No member carries the Whole alone.

No member is unnecessary.

The Body moves through relationship.

This is remembrance becoming corporate fulfillment.

The member remembers.

The member supplies.

The members converge.

The Body moves.

Christ becomes readable through the many.

What is already whole in God becomes increasingly visible through the appointed participation of His people. On earth as it is in heaven.

D I S C O V E R Y 1 7

THE WHOLE BEING
FITTED TOGETHER

One Final Image Gathers the Discovery

  • THE WHOLE BEING FITTED TOGETHER

Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord...

-  Ephesians 2:20-22

Members. Foundation. Cornerstone. The whole building. Being fitted together. Built together. A dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

Different people. Different generations. Different placements. One structure.

The cornerstone gives alignment. The stones find relationship. And what looked separate begins revealing one dwelling.

Look back across the movement.

The prophets carried portions. Daniel carried timing. Micah carried place. Isaiah carried suffering. Gabriel carried announcement. Mary carried the body. Jesus lived the Book. The cross fulfilled reconciliation. Resurrection defeated death. The Spirit opened understanding. The members remembered. The members became re-membered. The Body began moving consciously.

Different fragments. One movement.

  • The seed: the pattern precedes manifestation.
  • The light: many points reveal one image.
  • The Body: many members reveal one Christ-Life.
  • The building: many placements become one dwelling.
  • The epistle: what is written becomes readable.
  • The temple: the Presence becomes embodied.

Different images.

The same Whole becoming visible.

D I S C O V E R Y 1 8

THE THRESHOLD OF IT WAS WRITTEN

The Discovery Now Turns Toward Our Life

  • THE THRESHOLD OF IT WAS WRITTEN

We began with disciples who had already lived the events.
What they lacked was sight.
Then their understanding opened. The fragments gathered. Fulfillment
became visible.
Now the same question reaches our life.

What have we already lived without understanding what it belonged to?

What have we called random because we could see only the fragment?

What have we called absence while still living and moving in Him?

What have we called failure while formation was still occurring?

What have we reduced to one wound, one title, one relationship, one success, one mistake, without seeing what that fragment belonged to?

The wound was real. But it was never the Author.

The delay was painful. But pain did not make God absent.

The failure required truth. But failure did not become our final name.

The darkness was experienced. But it remained within the Life God already knew.

We participated before we understood. We were being formed before we recognized formation.

And now remembrance opens.

  • We recognize who we are.
  • We recognize where we are.
  • We recognize what the moment belongs to.
  • We recognize the Presence within the Life.
  • We recognize our portion.
  • We recognize that we are not isolated fragments.

We are members.

Living epistles.

Temples of His dwelling.

Expressions within the image.

Members within the Body of Christ.

And as the members remember, they are re-membered into conscious relationship with the moving Body.

The Body is joined. Fitted. Supplied. Embodied. Made readable.

Moment by moment. Day by day. Glory to glory.

What is whole in God becomes increasingly visible on earth.

That is where this prelude stops. Because now the discovery has become personal.

Now the Book turns toward the days we have already lived: the relationships, the pressure, the gifts, the boundaries, the ideas, the losses, and the ordinary moments we almost dismissed.

If the Word was already written, the Life already known, and Christ is re-membering a many-membered Body, what has our present portion been revealing and preparing to embody all along?

T H E D I S C O V E R Y C O N T I N U E S

Our life was never waiting to be invented.
It has been unfolding within authorship all along.

Known before understood.
Lived before fully recognized.
Forming before consciously remembered.
And now becoming readable.

The day arrives.
The moment becomes present.
The member awakens.
Remembrance returns.
The fragment recognizes the Whole.
The member finds its place.
Truth becomes embodied.
Love becomes visible.
The Body is re-membered.
And what God already holds whole moves through Life
toward visible fulfillment.
